Reading an image - media codes

 1) Analyse this RBK 50 Cent advert using the media codes you learned in the lesson: Technical, Written or verbal, Symbolic or non-verbal, Narrative. Write a paragraph for each one exploring the way meanings are created using those media codes.




Technical:

The poster is cut into two equal sized images ; one with an image of 50 cent and the other an image of each of his fingers prints . The images displayed are set in a black and white theme which could potentially signify a flashback which could hint his past experiences such as his gangster life . The black background could suggest that 50 cent is proclaimed as the central key of importance . Reebok demonstrate their slogan at the bottom left of the poster leading upon the ideology that they are inspired by 50 cent and are forced to lay him as the leading factor of the poster .

Written/verbal:

In the poster in front of the fingerprints at the top there is a 19 word quote from 50 cent in which he discusses his background and where he is from . The sans-serif writing suggests the quote is more shared upon a group or society . This is juxtaposed by the second quote displayed which is 50 cents own in which he states " I am what I am " . Which connotes his individuality that is testified through the font of the quote which is written in an almost gangster like unexperienced font .


Symbolic/non-verbal:


Reebok's poster has an image of 50 cent in which his costume is held with jewellery which could promote wealth apposed alongside , potentially a bullet proof vest which may hint the gang culture/crime that 50 cent is held within . The lighting sets the scene of suspense and crime . 50 making eye contact with the consumer establishes he is displaying his authority and shows masculinity as he gives connotations of having no fear . The colour could suggest flashbacks to past experiences .

Narrative:

An action code could be the filled in o's which present the bullets that were shot at 50 cent in real time life . An enigma code is the unrecognised meaning behind the fingerprints .




2) Next, analyse a print advert of your choice using the same media codes: Technical, Written or verbal, Symbolic or non-verbal, Narrative. Make sure you add your chosen print advert using the 'Add image' button in blogger (use Google Images to find the advert first and save it to your pictures or downloads).







Technical:

The image is central on Ronaldo who is vividly holding a largely presented bucket of KFC which hints its greatness similar to the greatness of Ronaldo in the footballing world . There is a slight light coming out from behind CR7 which presents the power he holds . The setting is a CGI crowd to create the footballing feeling .


Written/verbal:

The quote 'share the taste share the passion ' presents that KFC should be shared and is wanted by many . Cristiano Ronaldos name being highlighted underneath in a KFC like font is there in order to link his high brand image to the brand of KFC . The KFC brand logo sitting next to the writing so good is there in order to push that KFC is truly good food .


Symbolic/non-verbal:

Ronaldo wearing a red shirt could highlight that he is promoting KFC as their key brand image colour is red . The minimal lights displayed from the crowd area shows the constructioned focus is upon Ronaldo holding the produce of KFC . The area is set to be a football pitch but an empty one which refers to the importance given to KFC . CR7 displays a slight smile which signifies he is happy upon holding the KFC bucket .


Narrative:

The action code could be Ronaldo being on a pitch which is where his sporting excellancy is usually displayed .
An enigma code could well be what is to take place after as it could potentially be him playing an important game and KFC causing a good performance .

Reception theory

  1) What are the preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings for the RBK 50 Cent advert? The preferred  reading is that Reebok is open to individuality  which can be displayed with 50 cent being proud of who he is hence the statement ' I am what I am ' . The negotiated reading is the readers may view the bullets as 50 having been short and surviving linking to the resilience  of the shoe similar  to his resilience . An oppisitional reading is that readers may dislike 50 cents past and music career therefore leading towards not purchasing the shoes . 2)  What are the preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings for the advert of your own choice that you analysed for last week's work?
